What impact does being online have on us and our lives?

Respondents overwhelmingly recognise both the benefits and risks of being online. While 100% say their experience is a mix of positive and negative, there is also strong concern about its wider impact.

All respondents say they have experienced or witnessed harm online, believe the internet is changing society more for the worse, and support stronger limits or protections to make online spaces safer.

When asked how they mainly use online spaces, responses were evenly spread: news and information (19%), staying in touch with friends and family (19%), social media and scrolling (19%), shopping (13%), work or education (13%), and other uses (19%).

💡 Insight:

The findings highlight a complex relationship with digital life: people clearly value the internet’s practical and social benefits, yet remain deeply concerned about its harms.

The fact that every respondent has either experienced or witnessed harm online suggests that negative experiences have become normalised in digital spaces.

At the same time, unanimous support for stronger protections signals a growing public expectation that governments, platforms, and organisations must do more to create safer, healthier online environments.
