Perceptions of Respect in the Workplace

Most people, 68%, say they feel genuinely respected by their colleagues and teams. That’s encouraging, but it also means nearly 1 in 3 don’t feel that same level of respect. Imagine sitting in a meeting of nine people - three of them might feel undervalued or dismissed, even if no one realises it.

When it comes to leadership and senior staff, the gap is even wider. 64% of respondents said respect isn’t consistent across all levels of the organisation. This suggests a disconnect: while you might feel supported by your peers, that same feeling may not extend to how you're treated by managers or leadership.

Two-thirds of people (67%) believe that respect is shown through real behaviour: in how people listen, how feedback is given, how colleagues support one another. But a third still feel it’s just words - something written in a policy or repeated in a meeting, but not reflected in day-to-day actions.

In short, while many workplaces are getting it right, there’s still a significant number of people left behind and often quietly.

Respect shouldn't be a perk or something that varies by department or job title. It should be a given, felt by everyone, every day and everywhere.
